Product description

Author: Michał Witkowski

The castle in Żółkiew (Zhovkva), built by Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski, is inextricably linked with the figure of his grandson and heir, Jan Sobieski, who grew up in this magnificent residence and then – already as king – often returned to it. In the years 2012–2015, a team of conservators led by specialists from the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów discovered and secured previously unknown painted decorations from the 17th century on the walls of several rooms of the palace wing of the Żółkiew residence. Michał Witkowski, responsible for iconographic research in the project, undertook to recreate the ideological programme of some of the preserved Żółkiew polychromes and indicate formal patterns for them.
