Introduction and compilation by: Magdalena Górska, Barbara Milewska-Waźbińska
The previously unpublished manuscript, dedicated to Jan III, introduces the world of baroque symbolism, reflecting the ideals of the 17th century motto (devise), which was an efflorescence of court culture, served self-creation and fun, glorification of people and works. Trained in subtle invention and rebus games, the minds of courtiers did not need an extensive exposition in verse or prose to understand the motto. The community of education, detailed knowledge of mythology and heraldry, as well as the rules of using symbolism, enabled the efficient reading of all references and allusions. The basic motif of the collection is the Janina shield. ‘In Praise of the Most Serene and Invincible King of Poland, Jan III’, gives a unique opportunity to taste the subtleties of baroque panegyric poetry, and the concepts hidden in the drawings of Johann Jakob Rollos will often amaze the modern reader.
